The group also showcases animals at schools and various special events. In addition, the society is building a new conservation-learning facility. When built, people with disabilities and special needs will have the opportunity to get close to some of the reptiles, Johnson said. Page 47 July 2011 The facility, which is being renovated from an old of fi ce, will cost approximately $175,000 to complete, and will include ramps for the handicapped and a state- of-the-art viewing window so people will have a chance to see behind-the-scenes care for animals, Johnson said. The facility is expected to be open by fall. Society staff and volunteers also work with autistic and other special needs children. The children get to see fi rsthand the amount of work it takes to care for the reptiles, and are even given the opportunity to care for them by cleaning their enclosures. “When you see a child smiling, after getting that sense of accomplishment for helping an animal it is worth a million bucks,” Johnson said. Volunteers, such as Eagle Scouts, help keep the place humming, Johnson said. Wendy Cassidy, has been volunteering for fi ve years and said, “Seeing an animal come in sick, and getting better is the most rewarding part of helping out.” “It’s nice to see the system as a success,” she said.
