Page 43 July 2011 “She’s imaginative and a pleasure to work with.” Hanson said Shemer is committed to supporting Arizona artists and emerging artists, while fostering new generations of artists by offering art classes in printmaking, ceramics, mixed media, glass, drawing and jewelry, among others. In August, Shemer will showcase artwork from the center’s instructors and students. “We’re all about the student and the participant at Shemer,” Hanson said. New photography exhibits will include Heather Kirk’s “Gardening at Night” and Bryon Darby’s, “Seeing the Source: Water in the Desert.” A lecture on the history of water in Phoenix will correspond with the Darby exhibit. This summer, Shemer also will launch a new website to make it easier for the public to sign up for volunteer positions and to get information on upcoming events and exhibits. Hanson said she plans to display and sell artwork through the site, as well as post regular updates for Shemer on social media sites. Also in the works, she said, is a marketing initiative to bolster membership, an on-site gift shop, and a café serving noshes and coffee that will host informal discussion with local artists for the public. In what free time Hanson has outside of Shemer’s 1920s Santa Fe mission-style adobe walls, she said she enjoys studying design and architecture, visiting Phoenix and Scottsdale art galleries, dabbling in ceramics and mixed media artwork of her own, discovering new restaurants and coffee shops in her North Phoenix neighborhood, and watching independent fi lms. Since moving to Arizona 12 years ago, Hanson said her favorite way to host an out-of-town guest has been to take them for a visit to Shemer followed by a drink or dinner at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa. “Shemer is an oasis in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Phoenix,” Hanson said.
