Being a mom with two boys, this is a sport we can all enjoy together; so I can be active with them! As a result of their training, my boys benefit in all their sports by developing strength, flexibility and body control. They benefit in their music, scouts and school from the emphasis on mental focus, personal responsibility and respect for others.” ~Stacey Greene, pictured right with sons Dallas and Casey
Page 23 July 2011 Sanctuary helps care for animals By Nicholas Herrle In 2001 the Phoenix Herpetological Society started with about 26 animals. Today, the sanctuary for reptiles holds close to 1,400 animals in a 2 ½-acre stretch of land in north Scottsdale Last year, more than 112,000 children and adults toured the facility. The non-pro fi t organization uses donations and volunteers to help protect the reptile population, and educate the public about conserving the desert, said co-founder Russ Johnson. The society houses about 500 tortoises, 19 alligators, four crocodiles, four caiman, numerous snakes, turtles and lizards from all over the world. There’s even a few mammals such as kinkajous, wallabies and a raccoon that the owners would not allow to be euthanized, Johnson said. Johnson, Debbie Gibson and Daniel Marchand founded the organization to save reptiles indigenous to Arizona, and to create a facility where reptiles from all over the country could be rescued. The society also teaches others about conserving wildlife, while educating the public about responsible pet ownership, Johnson said.
