Page 18 July 2011 Arcadia High students win variety of scholarships Sarabeth Knoble By Allie Herriot Sarabeth Knobel of Arcadia High School has been chosen as the 2011 recipient of the $1,000 Arcadia News Scholarship. Knobel will attend Scottsdale Community College for two years to complete her general education requirements and then transfer to Arizona State University to major in communications. Initially wanting to major in journalism, Knobel recently had a change of heart and switched to communications. “With communications, I would have more options but still continue my love of writing,” Knobel said. After college, Knobel said she plans to combine her fondness for writing and volunteering by writing for non-pro fi t organizations. The AHS grad has volunteered through middle and high schools with such organizations as St. Mary’s Food Bank and the American Cancer Society. After spending two summers helping rebuild the community after Hurricane Katrina at Camp Victor in Mississippi, Knobel said she felt even more inspired to continue helping non-pro fi t organizations through her writing skills Arcadia News also inspired Knobel, she said, even though she lives outside the Arcadia neighborhood in central Phoenix. “There is a real sense of community, and local writers get noticed,” Knobel said. Knobel said she is thankful for the scholarship: “It’s going to be extremely helpful,” she said.
