Page 14 July 2011 ‘Jump,’ ‘First Class’ make cut for different reasons By Julie Demetros The Art of Getting By Director: Gavin Wiesen Actors: Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts and Rita Wilson Highmore, known for cute, pre-teen movies such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, August Rush and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory now stars in a quirky love story about two mis fi t high-school seniors, each going through their own problems. It’s a decent, summer, “cute and sappy” teen romance. George (Highmore) is not motivated enough to do his schoolwork, instead spending his time doodling in his schoolbooks and thinking about death. With his grades slipping rather quickly, he’s being given his last “last chance” to graduate. Sally (Roberts) has been having her own issues at home. And they don’t get any better when George comes into her life. The two become friends almost instantly, and everything seems fi ne at fi rst, but then George realizes that he has feelings for Sally, which is dif fi cult since she doesn’t want to have that kind of relationship with him. To make matters worse, George’s stepfather is acting suspicious when it comes to his job, his mother (Wilson) is stressed and distracted, and Sally’s mom is drunk most of the time or kissing her boyfriends goodbye on the front steps in the morning. More drama ensues when someone else becomes a possible love- interest for Sally. This is one of the fi rst movies in which Highmore isn’t a little kid or the voice of an animal, and he actually does quite well at portraying his character, George, with believable angst and depression.
