Page 12 July 2011 Know when you need to head for emergency room Dr. Jackie Doris By Jackie Doris, M.D. If you are seriously injured in a car accident, you know you need to go to a hospital emergency room for medical care. At other times, though, it can be more dif fi cult to decide whether you should go to the emergency room, seek out an urgent care center or wait until you can see your primary care physician. If you’re unsure, your safest choice is to err on the side of caution. If you think you need hospital care, it’s a lot better to be safe than sorry. However, if you are wavering and can immediately contact your family physician for advice, that’s probably the fi rst step you should take. When to Call 9-1-1 If you believe you or someone you know has a life-threatening injury or medical condition, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not try to drive yourself or anyone else to the hospital if the condition appears serious. Paramedics who respond to 9-1- 1 emergency calls are specially trained to stabilize emergency patients and coordinate their care with the most appropriate hospital emergency department for their treatment.
