Page 54 June 2011 Fashion Square kiosk aids police mapping of crime By Rachael McBride The Scottsdale Police Department is using software that provides both of fi cers and residents with an active map of all of the crimes occurring in their area. The department debuted a kiosk in Scottsdale Fashion Square last year that advertises the website. The site allows users to narrow searches by neighborhood, city or type of crime. The website also accepts anonymous tips and offers a free email alert service. This tool allows residents to sign up to get email alerts whenever a crime is registered near their address. The mall cart features information about area safety and slideshows about the police department’s various programs. While the website cannot be accessed from the cart, a police of fi cer sometimes is stationed there to answer questions from the public. The crime map can be found by visiting http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/ Police/ events/crimeanalysis. Carolyn O’Shea, a concierge at Scottsdale Fashion Square, said she regularly sees the cart in action. “I think this website can make all of us more aware of the realities we face in our community,” she said. Colorado-based BAIR Software offers the online program free to law enforcement departments. The RAIDS software stands for Regional Analysis and Information Data Sharing. Kelly Crnokrak, head of business development for BAIR Software, said the president and founders of BAIR are former police of fi cers and analysts who developed the software as a way to give back to their profession. “Their goal was to create a user-friendly site that increases transparency between police and the public,” Crnokrak said. “In the past 18 months, the RAIDS program has really taken off,” she said. “Police departments like having the ability to map crime patterns in their area, and share relevant information with their communities.” urbane. distorted . photography. www.urbanedistortions.net the new elegance.
