Page 4 June 2011 By Dale Messmer Most everyone likes recognition, and if you are to be recognized, what better than to be honored for being the best. It’s my pleasure to tell you that your neighborhood newspaper is a national champion. The Arcadia News was the fi rst- place winner in the General Excellence category at last month’s convention of the Association of Free Community Papers. It was one of two fi rst-place awards, four overall, won by the paper at the AFCP convention in Tampa. “The General Excellence award is a great honor,” publisher Greg Bruns said, “as we beat out some very tough competition.” We won three awards last year, the fi rst time the paper had won anything at the convention. Your newspaper also won the Andrew E. Shapiro Foundation Award for 2010 for continued coverage of breast-cancer awareness. The October paper was singled out as representative of a year-long campaign. “The judges commended us on covering the topic year-round and dedicating our paper and staff to the cause,” Bruns said. An advertisement for All Saints School was awarded a second place in the Best Agency Ad category. The fourth award was a third place for Best Original Color Photography. The winning shot was one I took during the Arcadia High football season. That photo also was awarded a second place for Sports Action Photography by the Arizona Press Club, one of two awards we won at the state level. The other was a third place for Best Non-Deadline Layout and Design by Bruns for an Arcadia Little League full-page feature. That’s six awards in a month. The weather wasn’t all that was nice for us in May. We’ve worked very hard to improve the paper and become one of the neighborhood’s assets. Arcadia is a great place to live and deserves a great community newspaper. A national fi rst-place award makes me feel like we’re heading in the right direction. We have more improvements in mind and feel this is just the start of the recognition. Most important, though, is the reward we get when you take time out of your day to pick up the paper.
