Page 48 June 2011 Owners urged to be ready to leave pets cared for By Katherine Torres The Arizona Animal Welfare League & Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urges pet owners to provide care for their pets if they become unable to do so. Free seminars are offered speci fi cally for “pet parents” and include information for people who are looking to set up a pet trust or a pet caregiver in case of a pet owner’s disability or death. Rochelle Tigner, who works with AAWL & SPCA, said the groups noticed a need to educate pet owners on how to plan for their pets in case of emergency. “We all know of someone who has just suddenly passed away or had something happen to them, and they still have their pets,” she said. “It just happens.” Tigner said many times when pet owners pass away or become disabled, their pets end up in animal shelters. Joel Klinge, a Scottsdale estate planning attorney, worked with the organizations as a presenter for a seminar in March. “When we talk about planning for our pets,” he said, “we need to think about what will happen in case we die before our pets, and what happens in case we become either temporarily or permanently disabled and unable to care for our pets. “It’s for both situations.” Klinge advised providing everything from where a pet owner keeps a pet’s medicine and medical information to fi guring out how long a pet is likely to live and the amount of money needed to provide for it. Also, tell possible pet caregivers what a pet’s daily routine is. “What are their daily activities? Do they like going hiking? Do they like going swimming?” Klinge said. “Pets are like people in the sense that they like to keep the same routine.” Klinge, who owns two dogs, stressed the need for pet owners to be prepared for care through items like pet trusts and pet-care plans. “Less than one in four pet owners provide care for their pets in case of an emergency,” he said. “It’s not because they don’t love their pets. People probably don’t have pets unless they are pet lovers. “It’s because people assume that a family member or a friend will step in if something happens.” For more information on future workshops, call 602-273-6852 or go to www.aawl.org.
