If you can fi nd them, do yourself a favor and pick up a bag of artisanal orecchiette (they are usually made in Italy and will be labeled “artigianale”). They are available at every Italian grocery I have ever been in and are carried by some supermarkets. They are pricey, but they cook up dense and chewy and are well worth the few extra pennies a bowl. This classic dish features cime di rape, also known as broccoli rabe in English, or sometimes referred to as turnip greens. Page 39 June 2011 Protector designed to stop phone use while driving By Brealyn Nenes A new technology system on the market from TASER International Inc. is aimed at reducing the number of teens operating their cell phones while driving. The technology, known as Protector, is a three-part system that controls a driver’s ability to use his or her cell phone while driving. Steve Tuttle, vice president of communications for TASER, said the device was created in large part to prevent distracted driving among young drivers. “It used to be drinking and driving that was a big epidemic here in the United States,” Tuttle said. “(Law enforcement) really attacked that, MADD really went against that and it no longer became socially cool to be drinking and driving.” “Well just as impairing as being drunk while driving is, is being impaired because you are actually distracted,” Tuttle said. The National Highway Traf fi c Safety Administration also found that driver distraction caused 16 percent of all fatalities in 2009, up 10 percent from 2005. Protector marries the driver’s phone and vehicle, and once the ignition is on it triggers controls that can limit some or all functions of the phone depending on permission set by the parent/administrator. It allows parents to set driving rules, monitor driving behavior, and track their or their children’s vehicles in case of an emergency. According to The National Safety Council, in January 2010 it was estimated that 28 percent of all traf fi c crashes - 1.6 million crashes each year - were caused by drivers who used their cell phones and texted. Protector comes with hardware that is installed into the user’s car, software installed onto the driver’s and administrator’s phone, and computer software for the administrator. Doug Fallon, the product manager of Protector for TASER, said the hardware installed in the vehicle acts as a Bluetooth signal once the ignition is turned on. “The software on the phone looks for the device and once it recognizes it, it locks down the phone,” Fallon said. The cell phone then pulls up a screen that cannot be navigated away from; it does offer a few interaction options, however, Fallon said. The driver can call 911, call someone on his or her favorites’ list, or request an override from the administrator. “You can always call 911, even when the phone is locked,” Fallon said. “That’s important and one of the main reasons cell phone jamming is illegal.” The device also allows a parent to customize who their child can send and receive texts or calls from, and also records trip reports. Trip reports show up as either a red or green light on the parents’ computer/cell phone and can tell them if the driver brakes too hard, takes a turn too fast, or how fast they were going during their trip. If a crash occurs, the hardware within the vehicle will immediately alert the administrator via email or an alert on their computer or cell phone. This also works the same way when a 911 call is made. The trip reports work with Google Maps and allows one to see exactly where the vehicle was driven. Parents can also set up geo fences around a certain area on Google Maps that will alert them if the vehicle passes an area they’ve restricted. Grace Corio, a Phoenix mother to two daughters, said she would use the device Continued on page 45 Scott R.
