Bruns This is not the column I was supposed to put in this month... this is a re-print of one of my personal favorites I wrote after my house was robbed. I was single and living alone when this happened nearly a decade ago, and while I was extremely upset, the “stuff” that was taken out of my home was easily replaceable. Last month The Missus had her purse stolen out of her shopping cart at a local membership store, and the thieves subsequently ri fl ed through her bag and found her car keys. It was only a matter of walking through the parking lot for a few moments while activating the keyless entry system and our family car was gone as well. It was a pretty intense phone call from her in the manager’s of fi ce of the store (her cell phone was in the purse so she was now at the mercy of public phones). The Missus was more upset than I’d ever seen her, as the personal violation aspect of it always seems to generate the most amount of frustration, but the most annoying part of this for her was the inconvenience of having to take a day off of work to visit the bank, the MVD, etc., to re-claim her identity and gain access back to her own life, after we had to shut it all down a day before. Anyway - more about all this next month. For now, enjoy this ditty titled “The Big Heist.” Laughter truly is the best medicine. My house was robbed recently, and I was naturally upset. The whole “violation thing” is what really bothered me. Most of us have experienced this at some point in time. The idea of someone skulking around inside my home, surveying my possessions, trying to weight the pros and cons of taking some of my stuff over some of my other stuff, just irritates me to no end. Part of the loss included a couple sets of satellite speakers, which are part of a complete system. The heart of the system was left behind, apparently too much of a burden to haul to the pawnshop. I called the manufacturer and placed my order to get my speakers back. While waiting, I explained my sob story to the rep, in hopes of getting some sort of victim’s discount. I got much more than that when the specialist explained to me that those very speakers, if used in any system other than Continued on page 25

This brought a tremendous smile to my face and helped me deal with the rest of the loss. It was almost as if Robert McCall from “The Equalizer” had surfaced from his hiding place of shame for doing that show in the 80s, and delivered “the treatment” for me. I can envision the thieves getting all excited about their heist, hastily plugging in the speakers to their (stolen) Sony ampli fi er while loading the (stolen) CD carousel with my jackrolled collection of Speed Metal Hits of the 80s: Interpreted by Church Organ . Then, anxiously awaiting the delivery of crystal-perfect sound (that’s the reason I bought the speakers anyway), popping a couple Bud longnecks, and then a loud pop, and pfffffftttt ; smoke rising from the amp, a bottle of Bud heaved through the (stolen) television, a child crying in the back bedroom, a litany of obscenities shouted; a neighbor banging on the thin, Section-8 wall, screaming back epithets and commands to quiet down; the landlord slipping a pink slip under the door at the exact moment when the estranged wife leaves a message on the answering machine that the thief can’t quite make out over the piercing screams of the child in the bedroom, but he’s pretty sure he just heard the words “my lawyers” and “custody.” Yes, indeed, I would gladly part with some more of my possessions just to see that. It pleases me to no end to think that some of my stolen property could be the fuse that ignites the bomb . Greg can be reached via e-mail: greg@arcadianews.com. As we are going to press with this June issue and I am wrapping up my column, I receive a phone call from Chandler police. It seems they found my wife’s purse and most of her belongings were still in it, which is great news. We’re not so sure about the car right now, as it has not been found at the property where the arrests were made (although a couple other stolen vehicles were recovered). The early reports seem to highlight a bust that has recovered about a dozen purses, all stolen in the same manner at a shopping mall, grocery store, etc., and that’s a good place to start. a a l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s o o • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i se e eu ums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r Vo o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Sp po o or N te e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a en n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d Da a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n l lt t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e en n a s s • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca S a ad d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S a as s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s h h er A l w w w Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a hu u ur rch News • H i Discover your new dentist.
