Page 42 May 2011 ‘Fascinating’ Jane Eyre is a fast-paced romance By Julie Demetros Jane Eyre Director: Cary Fukunaga Actors: Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell and Judi Dench This remake of the classic tale by Charlotte Brontë is exciting and fast-paced, a great retelling of the story. Jane Eyre (Wasikowska) is a supposedly plain young woman who worked as a governess for the wealthy Edward Rochester (Fassbender) before she ran away. She fi nds herself staying in the home of St. John Rivers (Bell), who wants to travel to India and become a missionary, and his two sisters. While living there, she has fl ashbacks from her past, starting out with her childhood at which point she was orphaned and ending with her stay at Mr. Rochester’s and the shocking secret he keeps locked up…literally. The story is a great romance with a sinister twist. It’s hard to capture every aspect and emotion in one movie. However, this movie did a pretty good job. Mia Wasikowska’s performance was a little disappointing. She was a little passive and blank at some moments when she should’ve been more expressive. Jane is supposed to be plain and abused as life has beaten her and kicked her while she was down, but at the same time she’s supposed to be stubborn and headstrong. Wasikowska really only touched on the fi rst part of the character. Judi Dench added her own fl air to the movie as Rochester’s housekeeper, Mrs. Fairfax. She plays the main character well, but she can also tone it down and be the side character without stealing all the attention. Michael Fassbender is a great choice as the dark Edward Rochester. Rochester is supposed to be intimidating, with little charm about his personality, like how Mr. Darcy is portrayed in the beginning of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice . Fassbender portrays this wonderfully and has an air about him that is very Rochester. In this movie, the importance of Jamie Bell’s character, St. John, is a little questionable at times; though in the book it’s clearer. If only they had made it clearer in the fi lm as well, it would have added to the story and made it slightly better. However, as it is with almost every book, if the movie kept every detail that was in the original novel, it would’ve been a four-hour movie. Although sometimes it seems that a four- hour movie with all the details is better than a two-hour movie with a lot of the original story left out, that isn’t the case with this fi lm. It touches on most of the vital pieces of the book and even includes some details that some of the other adaptations of the book change or don’t include. The movie is exceptional, and the way it was fi lmed enhances the mood to make it better. This paired with the actors and the emotions they portray makes for a great fi lm. A lot of people seem to be overlooking it, especially teenagers, and choosing to spend their time at the theater with other movies. Overlooked as it may be, I found the movie fascinating, and give it 3 ½ stars. Page 43 May 2011 Gabriel proves inspiration for pet-therapy group By Maria Herrick A 90-pound gray male Weimaraner, whose favorite food was cheese, favorite trick was to high fi ve, and favorite sport was fetching, changed the world for abused, neglected and at-risk kids. Gabriel was the inspiration behind Gabriel’s Angels, a non-pro fi t organization in Phoenix that helps ease the way for these children through pet therapy. Pam Gaber, Gabriel’s owner and founder of Gabriel’s Angels, will launch her book, “Gabriel’s Angels: The story of the dog that inspired a revolution” at the annual Unleash the Love Fundraising Breakfast May 6 at The Arizona Biltmore. Gabriel passed away a year ago at age 11, but not before he touched the lives of more than 5,000 children. Zee Peters, the group’s chief development of fi cer, said the breakfast is a free event for anyone who wants to learn more about Gabriel’s Angels. There will be a presentation, testimonials and 50 therapy dogs on hand. Registration and networking will begin at 7 a.m. with breakfast served promptly at 8 a.m. Reservations can be made by calling 602-266-0875. Gabriel’s Angels started providing child pet therapy 10 years ago when Gaber accidentally realized her dog Gabriel affected children in a way she could not. Gaber was volunteering at a crisis nursery. During her visits she would tell the children about her dog’s antics, like when he ate her shoes, and how he was disciplined. “The children bonded with Gabriel without ever meeting him,” Gaber said. The children at the crisis center fi nally met Gabriel at a holiday party when he strutted in dressed as Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer. The children immediately opened up and welcomed him, Gaber said. “We saw an animal reach children like no one ever could. The kids became sweet when they were previously violent,” Gaber said.
