With her son graduating this spring, DeWulf knew she’d miss the camaraderie and decided to introduce the hiking concept to Arcadia High School’s PTO. Members of the Arcadia PTO Hiking Club revel in the past year’s events and look forward to the next school year. “I have loved all the hikes we’ve done,” said Gena Stoll, the mother of a junior at Arcadia and a 2009 graduate. “We’ve tried different things, different hikes each and every time,” The group of 10 to 15 women has trekked throughout the Valley. Today, many older adults live with a brother or a sister, and they would be con- sidered Domestic Partners. Domestic Partners also include same sex couples or nonmarried, heterosexual couples. Domestic Partners usually are very close to each other and know the wishes of the other. A Domestic Partnership Agreement or Property Agreement can set out the partners’ desires about shared living expenses, property ownership and estate planning. Without a Domestic Partner Agreement, family members may get involved and try to prevent a partner from living in the oth- er’s home or using assets as the partners had desired. The Domes- tic Partner Agreement can put both partners at ease that their agreement to share expenses and care for each other is binding. Domestic Partners can also confer legal rights on each other with powers of attorney for finances and health. In April, the group conquered the Sunrise Pass in Fountain Hills, which is roughly 5.5 miles round-trip or two-three hours of hiking. “This trail was a little more dif fi cult, but with all the prickly pear cacti and cholla in bloom, it was worth it,” DeWulf said. After each hike, the women have lunch and get to know each other even better. “If you have the time, you show up and hike,” DeWulf said. “And then we get to talk about our kids, our school and the Arcadia community,” DeWulf said. Both DeWulf and Stoll said they hope mothers continue to hike in the next school year and some dads, too.
