A lot of women in the community are also breast cancer survivors and were able to show empathy toward Camrud. “The women especially showed a lot of love and support, which I saw as a key factor in keeping positive while going through something like that,” she said. “It’s like living in a small town with the bene fi ts of a big city,” she said. Although Arcadia residents come together over serious matters, they also bond at simple gatherings over things like food, laughter and conversation. Camrud said she enjoys contributing to bringing the community closer. “Food is a basis for a gathering and it brings people together,” she said. “The casserole is a family favorite that I enjoy sharing with everyone.” Kids are the key to the gathering, neighborhood resident Hillary Gurley said. “When we had kids we wanted to meet all of our neighbors, and this was a great opportunity, the kids all go to different schools and they still all play together,” she said. “This cul-de-sac is full of kids, it reminds me of the 1950s, they ride their bikes and play, I hope this tradition continues,” Gurley said. Schaecher said the block party is a great way to get everyone together and meet the different families and do something different. Michael Johnson agreed. “It’s a good way to meet the neighbors that we usually just wave to,” he said. “I have lived in Arcadia my entire life and I won’t be leaving.” l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s o o • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i se e eu ums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r Vo o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Sp po o or N te e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a en n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d Da a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n l lt t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e en n a s s • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca S a ad d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S a as s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s h h er A l w w w Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a hu u ur rch News • H i Plan your next date night. Page 37 May 2011 Arcadians launch online memory-saving application By Kirsten Adams From books and movies to banks and retailers, businesses around the world have made the move to online in recent years. Now, they are joined by one Arizona- based product: an online memory-saving application. In January, Arcadia couple Gary and Elaina Verhoff launched Kidlee.com, an online journal structured like Twitter for on-the-go parents to quickly log their children’s quotes, stories and milestones. In creating Kidlee, the Verhoffs followed an emerging business standard: the ‘freemium’ model. “Our idea is to give anyone the ability to use the site for free with a subset of the actual features available, and to offer some attached functionality for a price,” Gary said. Elaina credited the idea for Kidlee to a visit from her mother-in-law in January, when the family sat down and began reading memories written on small scraps of paper in a jar, which the parents kept in their house to jot down events in their kids’ lives. “I remember my husband was sitting behind me, and he thought, we have all these memories in a jar and we have grandparents and relatives missing out on them,” she said. “We thought about all these parents who have empty baby books and all the sharing that could occur with all these special stories.” Elaina, who grew up in Arcadia and returned with her family fi ve years ago, said that in “such a busy family community” it has become dif fi cult for many parents to remember writing down memories they shared with their children. “There are so many parents who feel guilty about not tracking these memories,” she said. “And technology is such a big part of their lives that Kidlee puts this (memory- keeping) ability right in their hands.” After registering for Kidlee, users can immediately add entries about their children. Like Twitter, posts are limited to 140 characters and are saved in chronological order, and friends and family can “follow” users to receive weekly updates. The posts can be separated by child and are stamped with each child’s age at the time of the entry. Michelle Chaix, an Arcadia mother of three, said that her use of Kidlee “helps keep track” of the little and big memories in her children’s lives. “I’m on the computer a lot and so when my children do speci fi c things – for Continued on page 39 • Root – Rx Program • Aerial Lift • Technical Support by our Research Laboratories • Cabling & Bracing • Professional Pruning • Root Zone Fertilization • Insect & Disease Management • Hazard Tree Evaluations & Removals I.S.A.
