If you do not have a valid will and/or trust, then you are relying on the intestate succession laws of the State of Arizona and how your assets are titled. The intestate succession laws should be viewed as the default rules. Most clients I fi nd are unfamiliar with these laws, and therefore, it is not a wise choice to base your estate planning on laws you may not have read or understand. What can a valid will do? A will can direct how you want your probate assets held and/or distributed. The term probate assets generally means all of your assets that are subject to probate. Assets subject to probate are all assets that you own as your sole and separate assets and if you are married, your share of the community assets. Continued on page 30 4520 E. Page 17 May 2011 Sarkis Continued from page 6 Fortunately, the solution appears to be simple: Clean. Experts insist that bed bugs can be prevented by stepping up cleanliness. In all likelihood, those who are moderate or above average with cleanliness inside their homes need not worry. By regularly cleaning sheets, blankets, and other bedding in hot water, in addition to drying on the highest heat setting, bed bugs should not be a problem. A common treatment for bed bugs is high temperature extermination. This process involves bringing in a high-powered heater into the property and heating the room to above 180 degrees to kill the bed bugs and their eggs. By regularly washing and drying with hot water and high heat, bed bugs are much less likely to be an issue. Though I often write about legal matters affecting the Justice Courts, I thought this was a necessary topic considering the increase in bed bug cases I have seen. In life, preventative measures often go a long way. Preventing a problem is always easier than fi nding a solution to one. The same goes for bed bugs. Be cognizant of the furniture you bring into your house, clean your house on a regular basis, wash and dry your bedding, and you will likely never encounter these terrible little creatures. CLS bags $5,000 win By Danielle Schenone Christ Lutheran School was awarded $5,000 for winning Shop for Schools, a Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market fundraiser involving more than 270 Arizona schools. Kindergarden through eighth-grade schools located within a three-mile radius of any Fresh & Easy store could participate in the third-annual Shop for Schools program. From Sept. 15-Dec. 31, participating schools received a $1 donation for every $20 spent. One way schools raised funds was by hosting a Shopping Night. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., fi ve percent of the total sales were donated to the designated school.
