Page 6 April 2011 The courts are now required in all matters both civil and criminal to have a language interpreter present if a party involved has limited English pro fi ciency. We must ensure that every person who comes into court, regardless of what language they speak, receives their due process under the law. With that said, the purpose of this month’s report is to give credit to all that the Court Interpretation and Translation Services do for our courts. In fi scal year 2010, services were provided for 5,150 matters resulting in 1,285 hours of interpretation in the Justice Courts alone. Throughout the higher courts, Court interpretation and Translation Services conducted approximately 42,000 Spanish language interpreter matters, representing approximately 20,000 hours of actual interpretation. Also in 2010, interpretation requests increased for dialects and lesser-used languages such as Arabic, Vietnamese, Russian and Korean. In addition, Court Interpretation and Translation Services assisted in 326 matters involving American Sign Language. The demand for these lesser-used languages mirrors the increased diversity of the population the courts serve. Furthermore, this demand is constantly increasing and the interpreters are now doing even more than they once did. At one time, the interpreters in the Justice Courts were only required to assist in criminal proceedings. Now they are asked to assist in even the smallest matters to ensure that all parties receive their due process under the law. The terri fi c work of the Court Interpretation and Translation Services department is invaluable. Without the dedication of the individuals involved in these services, the courts would likely grind to a halt. With that said, I’d like to thank all the hard working interpreters of all languages for all that they do to keep the judicial process going.
