By Itzayana Torres Cincy Hendricks, Tamarina One and Amber Ziemann donate their time to volunteer at the Arcadia High School snack bar during soccer, track, baseball and football games. Tamarina and Amber have been volunteering for almost two years. Cincy has been volunteering for three. Jeri Eshelman, a security guard at Arcadia High School, is the head of the snack bar. The girls went to her for volunteer opportunities and to ask for any help she may need during games, after school or before school. Anything that Eshelman asks the girls to do, they do it. “I love having them work at the snack bar at many of the sports games at Arcadia High School,” Eschelman said. “If they are walking by and ask me for help, they help me with setting up the basketball snack bar, even though they don’t do basketball snack bar, or just setting up sports events in general.” The girls said they enjoy volunteering at the snack bar. They feel like it’s their own business. They also say that volunteering is more important than a real job during high school even though you won’t get paid, it’s still more important. Eschelman appreciates their efforts. “I ask the girls for help any time of day,” she said. “Cincy Hendricks helps me. Anytime Cincy comes up to me and asks if I needs help, I say yes. She has helped with registration for upcoming freshmen, shown them around, helping them at the same time. “All three of the girls also help provide security at other school events such as dances and songwriter nights; help collect money, collect tickets and (work the) snack bar at those events. Planning and fundraising have begun to solidify the team’s summer plans. Coach Matt Ingram’s plan is to take all 13 players team on the excursion from July 26 to Aug. 4. After enduring 25 hours of travel, the team will spend fi ve days in Osaka and fi ve days in Sapporo. While in Osaka, the boys will have a chance to see the older and more traditional side of Japan, said Ingram. The team will visit temples and do some sight seeing around the city. In Sapporo, the players will get a chance to learn about Japanese baseball from the Nippon Ham Fighters, a professional team in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League, among the most successful pro baseball teams in Japan. Many people remember the efforts put forth by Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, but few likely know about the bullpen catcher who warmed these pitchers up, or his journey. Jeff Motuzas, the bullpen catcher for the Diamondbacks has been with the club since 1997. Jeff, the son of Richard and Claudette Motuzas, grew up in Nashua, N.H., where baseball did not become a mainstay in his life until about junior high when he began to develop, not necessarily physically, but just to the instincts of the game, Motuzas said. “That was when I fi rst decided I’m going to play professional baseball.” Before Jeff came to this realization he reminisced about a time when he was 9 years old, when he almost gave up baseball altogether. “My coach that year made the team run the bases,” he said. “I hated running when I was younger. “When I told my dad I wanted to quit, he said that I would have to call and tell the coach myself. “I was too afraid to call and quit, so I just stuck with it, and it became an awfully good decision,” Jeff said.
