Page 20 April 2011 Source Code grabs early, sticks with you until end By Julie Demetros Source Code Director: Duncan Jones Actors: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga Source Code grabbed my attention right from the start and held it there with invisible duct tape. It was a little far-fetched, but what movie isn’t? Capt. Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) wakes up on a commuter train in the body of a man named Sean. A woman named Christina (Monaghan) is sitting across from him and seems to know the man whose body he’s in. After eight minutes of total confusion, the train explodes. Stevens is jolted awake and fi nds himself back in his own body and in an isolation chamber, strapped to a chair. A computer monitor shows mission controller Carol Goodwin (Farmiga) who tries to explain the situation a little by telling him that he’s part of an operation called Beleaguered Castle. Through technology, Stevens is being sent into a sort of replay of the last eight minutes of Sean’s life. His mission is to fi nd the bomber of the train before the train explodes to prevent a second attack that Goodwin is certain will happen. But there’s more to it than what Goodwin is telling him, and he’s determined to fi nd out everything. Surprisingly enough, there weren’t too many plot holes. As mentioned before, the idea of the story and parts of the story are unrealistic and probably would never happen in real life, but movies aren’t supposed to be realistic. Three Arcadia seniors 2nd in C-SPAN video contest Three Arcadia High School seniors took second place in C-SPAN’s national 2011 StudentCam competition for a documentary about immigration Jake Lipson, Danny Miller and James Harkins will receive $1,500 for their entry “The Border.” Angel Martinez-Granados, a junior at South Mountain High School, received an honorable mention for his video “Washington Through My Lens: Arizona SB 1070,” also about immigration. The national competition, now in its seventh year, invites middle school and high school students to produce a fi ve- to-eight minute documentary, with this year’s topic focusing on “Washington, DC, through my lens.” With entries coming from 1,481 students in 40 states and D.C., C-SPAN received a record 1,069 videos, marking a 6 percent increase over the number of submissions for last year’s Student Cam. “We applaud Jack, Danny, James and Angel’s wonderful work,” said Ivan Johnson, vice president of public affairs for Cox Communications Arizona. “Following in the footsteps of other great Arizona-raised fi lm makers such as Stephen Spielberg, their talent truly continues this tradition.” The top 27 videos will air on C-SPAN (Cox channel 2), one each day, starting April 1, followed by an interview with the winning student during “Washington Journal,” C-SPAN’s morning call-in program. All of the winners are available on the StudentCam website: www.c-span.org/ studentcam. C-SPAN’s Digital Bus was scheduled to stop at Arcadia High in March to honor the students. In addition to congratulating students at both schools for their hard work and awards, Arcadia and South Mountain high school students had the opportunity to tour the Digital Bus and learn about C-SPAN’s public-affairs programming.
