Page 18 April 2011 9 Hopi students selected for district’s Honor Band Nine Hopi Elementary School fi fth- graders have been selected for the Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District’s South District Honor Band. The South District Honor Band features the top band students from elementary and middle schools from throughout the district. Students were selected for the Honor Band after tryouts at Coronado High School. Students from Hopi who were selected for the Honor Band include Lena Halden on fl ute, Carson Charlton on clarinet, Payton Taylor on clarinet and Louie Maddox on alto sax. Also Max McCauley on trumpet, Jonathan Hake on trombone, Jacob Staudenmaier on trombone, Dallas Greene on tuba and Jack Beckis on percussion. The Hopi students were members of the school’s Ambassador Band. The Ambassador Band is under the direction of Roger E. Page 19 April 2011 Leadership retreat helps delegates learn tolerance By Kirsten Adams Take the time to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, Scottsdale high schools’ Unitown members said. It can go a long way. During SUSD’s Unitown leadership retreat earlier this year, student delegates of every race, ethnicity and sexual orientation spent a week crossing barriers that often divide them in their schools. They learned to promote tolerance and diversity in their communities. Donovan Lockwood, an Arcadia High School student who has participated in Unitown as a delegate and a counselor for the past four years, said that experiencing both sides of the program has been “moving” for him. “I couldn’t tell you which is more rewarding,” Lockwood said. “You get to see these changes in other peoples’ lives and be a part of that change as a counselor, but as a delegate you get to feel that change yourself.” During a “culture night” of the retreat, Lockwood said, students presented symbols of their values and traditions, from a Lebanese student who played cultural music to an Indian native who performed a traditional dance. They were all able to speak openly about their ways of life without any judgment from their peers – for some, for the fi rst times in their lives. “I knew everyone there would appreciate me,” Lockwood said. “And that kind of support is something that did change my life.” From teenagers who have never been placed within a stereotype to those who face prejudice on a daily basis, a variety of students have become involved with Unitown in SUSD since it was started in 1990. Lockwood said that the relationships formed during the trip “teach people who have been discriminated against that they have allies in places they may have not known before.” “If you branch out just by having a conversation with someone you never thought you would, you can learn to appreciate why they’re special and why they’re different,” Lockwood said. “If you can fi nd a place in your life where you might be able to accept someone you might not normally, you will become a better person from it. There’s no doubt about that.” Joe Baca, who has spent 20 years with Unitown as co-director for Arcadia High’s program and co-coordinator for the SUSD program, said he “was in a really bad place” when he fi rst became involved with the program. With a background of depression and drug use in his teenage years, Baca was encouraged to become involved with Unitown by a teacher. After the program helped him through that dif fi cult part of his life, he continued his work with it for another two decades. “It really does change lives, and to be part of something like that, to me, is a major honor,” Baca said. “This program actually changed my life, so I want to give back what it gave me.” Decreasing discrimination in high schools is still a work in progress, Baca said, but students who participate in Unitown come back with a stronger sense of awareness and a desire to “really make a change.” “They usually say, ‘This isn’t our generation; there is no assimilation of (discrimination) in our generation,’” he said. “And I think the students really aren’t aware until they see it here. “It comes in all different forms. It’s not just racial, it’s socioeconomic, it’s peers, it’s all kinds of different forms… and I think at fi rst, they think it’s just the 1960s kind of discrimination that you see in the movies.” Andrea Kaloush, a graduate of Chaparral High School and a previous delegate and counselor at Unitown, said the impact of the program on her life and her ability to appreciate others’ differences is lasting. Kaloush is now offended by the use of commonly used, discriminatory words like “retarded” and “gay,” empathizing with the feelings they stir in the people to whom they are directed. She met many of people suffering from discrimination during her times at Unitown. “It allows its delegates to walk in another’s shoes, which is life-changing,” Kaloush said. “By learning about accepting other ethnicities, sexes and lifestyles, I feel as though I have a stronger understanding about humanity than I could have had without Unitown.” Some of SUSD Unitown’s past delegates and counselors took what they learned to heart. They helped establish Arizona State University’s diversity-awareness program, Collegetown, to continue promoting tolerance on college campuses. “We have a model that we kind of adopted: Make a change, take a risk,” Baca said. “You’ve got to take a risk, talk to people, learn about them, build connections with people.” Campus tours Arcadia High School is offering one- hour school tours for parents and 8th-grade students.
