Page 12 April 2011 Jones Continued from page 8 Summer youth activities mean need for physicals By Ritu Sadhu, M.D. Summer is just around the corner, and information on summer camps and sports activities already is fi lling our mailboxes. If your son or daughter will need a camp or sports physical, plan now so you’re not caught in the last-minute rush. If you are bringing a daughter or son for a sports or camp physical, please bring all the activity paperwork, immunization records and the names of any current medications. If you have other health concerns, such as uncontrolled asthma, please address that in appointment prior to the physical. The physical is a quick, simple exam. Depending on the age, immunizations may be updated and screening tests may be done. Family history will be reviewed as well as an assessment of whether or not the child or teenager can safely participate in the activities. A family health history helps you know your risk and your children’s risks for diseases or chronic health conditions. The best history contains information on three generations of biological relatives, the age at diagnosis for each family member, and the age and cause of death for deceased family members. We will listen to the heart and take blood pressure as part of screening for any underlying heart conditions. Other tests may be ordered depending upon health history and physical fi ndings. For sports physicals, we also will talk about any previous injuries, concussions, etc., and offer education on preventing future injuries. I would also like to encourage the parents to schedule annual health care physicals for themselves even if they are generally healthy overall. This gives us an opportunity to discuss preventative measures to avoid any future chronic health conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol. Depending on your age, certain screening tests will be ordered such as Pap smear and mammogram. Timely visits to your physician can help detect many medical problems that might be overlooked when a physician is seen for sick visits only. We hope that you have a wonderful and safe summer. Dr. Ritu Sadhu taxpayer to retain use and occupancy of the gifted properties during the term of the trust which is set by the taxpayer. One further note is that the Tax Relief Act also lowered the gift tax rate to 35 percent from 45 percent. This rate is scheduled to increase to 55 percent Jan. 1, 2013 if Congress permits the Act to sunset. The suggested gifting ideas are by no means comprehensive and should be carefully explored with your estate planner before any gifts are made.
