Pain warns us of something wrong, but according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke, most headaches are not cause for alarm and can be treated. Headaches vary from patient to patient, but these are the general types of headaches and recommendations. Migraines About 5 million people in the U.S. suffer from a migraine attack at least once a month. Some people see auras, like fl ashing lights, or have distorted vision before getting a migraine. Bright lights and loud noises can bother migraine sufferers. Nausea can accompany a migraine. Red wine, caffeine, starchy foods and chocolate are common food and drink triggers for migraines. Hormonal changes also can trigger migraines. Eliminate triggers, and try over-the- counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Avoid pain medicine with caffeine. If over-the-counter medicines and eliminating triggers do not help, see your physician. Both prescription pain medicines and preventative medications can relieve migraines. If you are prone to migraines, eat breakfast and stick to a healthy diet. Talk to your physician about diet modi fi cations to avoid migraines. Tension If you feel as if your whole head is being squeezed and pain radiates from your neck, jaw and/or shoulders, you likely have a tension headache. Start with over-the-counter pain relief with anti-in fl ammatory properties like ibuprofen or naproxen.
