The Titans open the regular season March 1 on the road at Queen Creek. Their fi rst home game is March 8 against rival Coronado. THE SEASON SCHEDULE: Tues., 3/1 (A) Queen Creek Thurs., 3/3 (A) Apache Junction Tues., 3/8 (H) Coronado Thurs., 3/17 (H) Paradise Valley Tues., 3/22 (A) Maricopa Wed., 3/23 (A) Higley Tues., 3/29 (H) Seton Thurs., 3/31 (A) Tempe Fri., 4/1 (A) Mingus Tues., 4/5 (H) Williams Field Thurs., 4/7 (A) Coronado Tues., 4/12 (H) Higley Wed., 4 /13 (H) Notre Dame Thurs., 4/14 (H) Maricopa Thurs., 4/21 (A) Seton Tues., 4/26 (H) Tempe Thurs., 4/28 (A) Williams Field Tues., 5/3 (A) Notre Dame Sophomore Kylie Herd was selected to the 4A-II East Sky Region fi rst team, voted upon by region coaches. Dylan Hambright from last year in Schellhardt and junior Andrew Naderer. Schellhardt went 6-4 with a 2.16 ERA. Naderer, a left-hander, dominated the competition last season en route to a 5-3 record and a 1.85 ERA. The questions seem to come offensively. “I am looking for a consistent bunch that can hit the ball,” said Rudolph. In the team’s fi rst action of 2011, the Titans played the 5A Mountain Pointe Pride in an unof fi cial scrimmage game. Because the game is played prior to the of fi cial start of the season, the score was not kept. Arcadia struggled at times against the 5A opponent, but the team did show positive signs for the upcoming season. After a rough fi rst inning, starting pitcher Cornish recovered to strike out one batter in a scoreless second inning. In the fi fth inning, Cornish legged out an in fi eld single and eventually scored when Schellhardt reached base on a throwing error. Varsity newcomer Alex Reynolds also showed poise against the elevated competition, going 2-for-2 in the game. The Titans open the regular season at home against Queen Creek on March 1. Titan nine looking for next step By Wayne Schutsky Arcadia sophomore Kylie Herd garnered a fi rst-team spot on the East Sky Region team, voted on by all head coaches in the region. The honor places Herd among the top eight players in the region. “She works very hard out there,” said Arcadia coach Ives Machiz. Herd dominated the low post for most of the year for the Titans, leading the team in points (8.3) and rebounds (4.4) per game. “She is always trying to get better,” said Machiz. “Her footwork has really improved this season.” Herd has shown up all season, especially against tough competition. In two games against East Sky champion Seton Catholic, Herd averaged 13 points per game. AHS softball returns 10 for season State titlist off and running this year, too By Wayne Schutsky After moving to the Valley from Las Vegas more than a year ago, Arcadia High School senior Dylan Hambright has made a splash in the track and fi eld community. Hambright moved to the Arcadia area in September of 2009 when his father relocated his pool-design business because of the economy. Despite the stress of moving in the middle of high school, he made the best of the situation and focused on track, said Hambright. “I got more concentrated and focused on getting ready to run,” said Hambright. “I just wanted to prove myself to everyone.” Following the move, Hambright could not seem to lose on the track, highlighted by a fi rst-place fi nish in the 400-meter dash at the 4A-II Arizona State Meet in May. He also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash. “Winning state was great because my Dad was so happy,” said Hambright. “There was just so much built onto it.” The successful performance at state highlighted a great season for Hambright in which he went undefeated and received the district MVP award. Hambright also participated in the 400 at the 70th Annual Chandler Rotary Invitational in March. In the fi rst invitational of his young career, Hambright managed to place fi rst against some of the best runners from Arizona, California, Texas and Colorado. He also broke the Arcadia High School record for the 400-yard dash for the fi rst time at the event after running it in 48.75 seconds. “I didn’t expect to go out and be as good as I wanted to be last season,” said Hambright. “I just expected to go out and run decent times, and I ended up doing a lot better than I thought.” He has now broken the school record on fi ve occasions. His best time in the 400 is 48.3 seconds. “I think I have gotten my time down a lot more this year,” Hambright said. “I’ve done a lot of gym work during the summer, and I’ve gotten a lot stronger.” The win in Chandler prompted some attention. Coaches and scouts began to show interest, said Hambright. He estimates he has received more than 40 letters of interest so far. Some of the schools he is most interested in include Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and the University of Montana. “All of those schools have great programs,” Hambright said. Hambright also placed fi rst in the 400-meter dash at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State University last year and won the same event at the Arizona Meet of Champions. He placed third in the 400 at the Great Southwest Classic at the University of New Mexico as a representative of the state of Arizona. Outside of school, Hambright also races with AZ Elites. He credits Elites coach Clif McKenzie with much of the success he has had in Arizona. McKenzie scouted Hambright at one of his school meets and invited him to join the Elites. Hambright was training six times a week with his coach before he started meeting with his school team in February. Prior to meeting McKenzie, Hambright trained and worked out on his own. He would train by himself and watch You Tube videos of other runners to improve his mechanics. “To say he has always been self- motivated would be an understatement,” said his father, Keven Hambright. Before coming to Arizona, Hambright showed fl ashes of success while running in Las Vegas. After playing soccer as a kid, he decided he wanted to run track upon entering Palo Verde High School, said Keven. The team decided to start him off on the 300-meter hurdles. Because he had no track background, the hurdles gave Hambright some trouble, but his speed bailed him out. “He would start out ahead and then fall behind when he got to the hurdles,” said Keven. “But he was so much faster than everyone else that he would still win in the last 40 meters.” Despite the rough beginnings, Hambright performed well as a freshman at Palo Verde and then quali fi ed for the State Meet as a sophomore. Hambright may have gained some of his athleticism from his father. Keven played soccer in high school and quali fi ed for the US Nationals team. Dylan originally followed in his father’s footsteps before switching to track in high school. “My older brother was always the big soccer player,” said Dylan. “I’ve never had a whole of pressure to play soccer. I’m very individualized.” In early April, Hambright will participate in the highly-touted Arcadia Invitational in Arcadia, Calif. The Invitational will mark the most competitive race of his running career, said Hambright.
