Page 32 March 2011 Got wisdom teeth? Wisdom teeth are your third molars, and are often unable to fully emerge from under the gum due to a lack of space in the mouth. This is called impaction. By continuing to develop below the gum, these teeth often push functioning teeth out of place and may cause pain and infection. If you suspect you have an impacted wisdom tooth, visit Dr. Day for an evaluation of the problem and the gentle extraction of the tooth. en a W Wisdom unable to sp nti fte us su r. ntl W un lack of By con teeth o ma m y ca If you o s visit Dr the gen Oral & Facial Surgery Center of Phoenix Reed H. How cool is that? I asked the class. This is a completely creative assignment where your creativeness will essentially determine your grade – that’s incredible. Miss Cochran echoed my sentiments exactly and explained it’s her favorite assignment of the year. I’ve been to a couple dozen classrooms over the years and I’ve hosted many Cub Scout and Brownie tours at our of fi ce on Indian School Road. In all the years I’ve been doing this, it’s always a joy to be able to see our schools in action and to meet some of the educators and students in the neighborhood. I remember guest speaker days when I was in school. I remember how all of us were in awe when a fi reman came lumbering into class with a fi re axe in his grip. I also remember the guy who would come in with no visual aids and would talk about how his job was to make sure a bunch of other people were doing their jobs, and that never seemed like a very interesting gig to anyone. So, I have to commend Miss Cochran’s class – you guys (and girls) were awesome! Thank you for being so welcoming, respectful and curious – I appreciate your questions and your time. I also appreciate all of those nice handwritten thank you letters you sent. That absolutely made my week. A few of your newspapers were sent to me as well, and from what I’ve seen, some of the items we discussed were implemented – nice work! Some students (with parental encouragement, I know) went so far as to go get their newspaper printed at a local copy shop on “newsprint” colored paper – so the paper has a very authentic look about it. Good work everyone! I look forward to visiting Miss Cochran’s class next year so we can once again mesh a real community business with a classroom community assignment. This is the kind of thing that makes it all worthwhile. Being able to contribute and give back to the community we live and work in. Fifth-graders earn honors as Scouts By Max McCauley On Feb. 9, 18 Webelos Scouts graduated into Boy Scouts. The new Scouts are Justin Jarvis, Moses Horne, Conner Hoban, Dallas Greene, Alexander Gossett, Sam Ellington, Jacob Denious, Lyndon Beischel, Nathaniel Zachariah, Aidan Weber, Grif fi n Vondy, Connor Tiemeyer, Austin Suder, Jacob Staudenmaier, Scott Mitchell, Max McCauley, Anthony Mayo and Riley Johnson. The Scouts are all fi fth-graders from Hopi, Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center or Christ Lutheran elementary schools. Usually, Webelos graduate at the end of fi fth-grade, but these boys each earned the highest honor of Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light, so they could bridge to Boy Scouts mid-year. The Arrow of Light requires the boys to earn many, many different merit badges and complete a lot of other requirements. The ceremony was at Hopi and it was very special. There was an emcee, Rod Jarvis, and two Eagle Scouts from Troop 6, Gregory Emmons-Perkes and Zane Shafer, who helped along with two other Boy Scouts, Wesley Spencer and Connor Brachpl. Dave Binsfeld is the adult liaison between the Boy Scout Troop and the Cub Scout Pack and he helped, too. It was great to have the older boys at the ceremony as role models. It made the ceremony even more special. At the end of the ceremony, each new Boy Scout was given a handmade arrow. The arrows were all different because they were decorated to show each boy’s personal achievements. They were cool. I am looking forward to Boy Scouts. The backpacking trips sound like they will be fun because they’ll be different from the camp-outs we’ve done so far. We have learned to pitch tents, make safe fi res and use a knife safely - but backpacking will be all new. Max McCauley is a fi fth-grader at Hopi Elementary School.
