Bruns When the discussion of modern media pops up, someone will invariably talk about the impending death of newspapers. Most of the time, the person making this prediction will attribute the notion to the often-quoted “they” – as in, “they say newspapers are dying.” Some will base the prediction on their own knowledge and assessment of it all, which may be nothing more than an af fi nity for an Apple ipad, but at least it’s an original thought. I try not to engage in these kinds of discussions, because usually the person who is ready to write-off the great American newspaper industry is deaf to any ideas that don’t involve everyone getting their global news and opinions from the likes of Yelp.com. When and if I do get involved in these types of discussions, I explain that this newspaper is different because this community is different. This newspaper is actually fun to create and it’s fun to work for. It’s fun to be a part of the community and it’s rewarding to be part of something bigger than a 500-word humor(less?) column. Last month I was asked to visit Miss Cochran’s class at Hopi Elementary to talk to the class about a super-cool assignment they were doing. The students were being asked to create their own “newspaper” for a book report. Or, rather, the book report Continued on page 32 Miss Cochran (back, left) and her 5th grade class at Hopi hosted the Arcadia News publisher.
