Clenching your jaw and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems can cause tension headaches as well. Surprisingly, chewing too much gum has been known to cause tension headaches. Allergy/Sinus Infections If you are headache free most of the year, but get headaches this time of the year, blame spring allergies. Avoid allergens as much as possible, and take an over-the- counter antihistamine and/or decongestant in addition to over-the-counter pain medicine. If your facial pain becomes worse, your sinuses may no longer be draining, setting you up for a sinus infection. A fever could indicate this bacterial infection that needs antibiotics. Consult your physician. Cluster These headaches are similar to migraines and occur more often in men than women. A cluster headache is a severe headache that could last fi ve days in a row and then disappear for the rest of the year. This headache is harder to treat. Migraine medications can help, and some sufferers have found relief with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. If you experience headaches more than three times a month or the headache is the worst you’ve ever had, seek help from your physician or the emergency department. If a headache is severe and sudden, seek emergency attention. A recurring headache in children should be evaluated by a physician; so should a persistent headache in someone previously headache free. Also seek help for headaches if you throw up and cannot keep food or liquids down; experience problems such as numbness, tingling or weakness in your body, have a stiff neck, fever or convulsions; lose consciousness or are confused after a blow to the head; or feel pain in your eye(s) or ear(s) as well.
