In light of recent events, the need for security is as important as ever. It goes without saying that we live in a dangerous world and yet personal security is often taken for granted until something bad happens. For those of us that work in the court system, one of the areas most likely taken for granted is our personal safety and security. Yet with the dedicated efforts of trained security professionals, court employees and the public are provided with a safe and secure work environment. Court security is always present and assists in a variety of ways, such as responding to alarms, threats, assaults, emergency evacuations and other situations that require security and medical attention. Any individual that passes into a superior court, municipal court, or justice court may be subject to a security search. Handheld possessions such as purses and briefcases also are subject to search and inspection - and for good reason. In 2010, among the millions of individuals who passed through Arizona courts, including the Justice Courts, Superior Courts, Municipal courts, and other smaller courts, there were approximately 100,000 items described as weapons detected at security checkpoints. These various prohibited items ranged from standard weapons such as knives and fi rearms to far more bizarre weapons, such as swords, ice picks and meat cleavers. It’s dif fi cult to say what many of these individuals would have done if permitted entry into our facilities with weapons. Some may have had them for self-defense and forgot to leave them at home prior to coming to court. Others might have had the intention to do harm to someone. However, thanks to the diligent and hard- working members of the courts’ security force, the judiciary and its employees are kept safe and secure With that said, in all aspects of life, and especially with regard to personal security both at home and in the workplace, take time to prepare. Steven Sarkis is the justice of the peace for the Arcadia Biltmore Justice Court.
