It’s roof rat time again and collection sites mean help By Wayne Schutsky For more than a decade, the Arcadia Citrus Program has helped residents deal with the roof rat population while providing fruit to a number of causes and organizations. The program, started by Arcadia residents Barry and Joan Paceley, encourages local residents to glean all citrus fruits from their trees and limit food and water sources available to roof rats. “These neighbors are engaged in a program to remove citrus fruit from their properties, which results in fewer roof rats,” Barry Paceley said. Additionally, residents are asked to donate all excess, usable fruit to the citrus program. People can drop off all citrus fruits at the Elks BPOE Scottsdale Lodge at 6398 E. Oak St. on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon through March 26. Commercial drop-off is 8 to 10 a.m. With the help of volunteers and Maricopa County jail inmates, the fruit is sorted and packed for distribution to such statewide bene fi ciaries as the East Valley Men’s Center, Saint Matthews Food Bank, Heard Museum Artisan Fair, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Of fi ce, City of Guadalupe, and several of Arizona’s Indian communities. “At the same time, they (donors) have saved more than $350,000 in tax dollars in the fi rst nine years of the program,” Paceley said. “This good quality fruit will be made available to food banks, senior centers, Arizona Indian tribes and Maricopa County jails.” Those making donations also are encouraged to attend a Roof Rat Clinic 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on-site. The Paceleys discuss the best methods for rodent eradication, home-proo fi ng and landscaping. The Arcadia Citrus Program currently is looking for volunteers to help senior homeowners who can no longer collect fruit. To schedule a volunteer opportunity, contact Paceley at barry@paceley.net.
