Page 30 February 2011 Walks help fi nd fi tness and friends Wally Reed By Rae Aaron Wallace Reed has walked a mile nearly every day for the past 80 years, 50 of those in Arcadia. At 94, the retired M.D. said his motivation is to keep healthy, but he also enjoys the fresh air, quiet neighborhood and friendly neighbors. “I liked the beauty of the Arizona desert and the comradeship that fellow practitioners have in this environment and the welcome feeling that was given to me,” he said. Meredith Savage, a neighbor not too far from Wally, said she sees him often during her own walks through the neighborhood. “I walk early in the morning at least six days a week, and Wally is one of the ‘regulars’ I see out and about,” she said. “He stops to give a salute whenever I see him. “He clearly cares a lot about the neighborhood, because the morning after Halloween, I saw him stop to pick up candy wrappers that were in the road.” Wally’s wife, Maria, found the house on Exeter and liked it, Wally said, because it allowed her to bring the groceries right into the kitchen from the garage. In order to make Maria happy, he said, they moved in with, at that time, their three kids. The couple met when Maria was a German exchange student he met at summer school. They were married for 60 years. Now, three of his six children are doctors. One, Michael Reed and his family, also live in Arcadia. Wally grew up in Covina, Calif. with two sisters, and a younger brother, Bob, who is living in San Diego. He has nine grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.
