I was surprised to see the speedometer bouncing wildly around 75, as it took quite a while to reach that speed. Then came the voice of reason: “Car 15 – you need to SLOW DOWN! You are going WAY too fast for this residential zone. You just HIT a little girl without even touching your brake pedal! You are in danger of breaking the simulator and fl unking this class.” I let off the gas and the simulator started its noticeable drop in howl and hum. It was readily apparent who was driving car 15. I never did break the classroom speeding habit, so I ended up taking the class over that summer. It wasn’t too terrible, though. Car 10 turned out to be a DeLorean. Tony’s Continued from page 12 wasn’t very happy.” She said the joy in her job is spending time getting to know customers. “I see most of them not only in the shop, but also at the grocery store.” Beyond car repair, the family auto shop is involved in the community and has been of service to several local churches, local sports teams and such non-pro fi t organizations as the Salvation Army. Tony Guido said he believes whole- heartedly in participating in the community. For instance, Tony’s bought a 19-passenger van for a group of mentally handicapped adults that puts on plays for the Arcadia public, the Detour Theatre Company. “It’s our empathy. It’s always tough to see suffering of any kind and our help is what makes us a part of the Arcadia neighborhood,” he said. As another service to the community, Tony’s went green in 2009 to counterbalance all the fumes and harmful fl uids they use in the shop. The building is equipped with solar panels and energy- ef fi cient lighting. Instead of using water to wash away contaminants, an organic product called Nature’s Broom is used. “It’s a lot like cat litter,” said Catherine. “We lay it out on the fl oor and it absorbs all the fumes and excess liquids on the fl oor.
