Their neighborhood home, which was across the street from one of their daughter’s best friends, had just come up for sale. It sported all the speci fi cs on their list and more, including the garage, a huge kitchen and a space for Jill’s jewelry design. It didn’t take long for the couple to make a decision. This was their chance to stay in the neighborhood they had grown to love and have all the features they had wanted to add to their home. Since their daughters, Jasmine, 12, and Julie, 8, were so upset at the thought of leaving their friends and neighborhood, the couple decided to surprise them when they bought the house. But the most dif fi cult part of the purchase was keeping it quiet from everyone, including the girls. The night they closed on the house, the couple took the girls to visit their neighbor and say goodbye. When they entered the back yard, the girls saw their grandparents sitting around a fi re pit and holding a large sign that read, “Welcome to Your New Home!” “Do you know how hard it was to keep it a secret for over a month?” Jill asked. “I couldn’t tell anybody, just in case. “The girls were a little suspicious when we walked into the back yard.” It didn’t take long until the kids were inside deciding which rooms would be theirs and what color to paint the walls. And that was just the beginning of the hard work. The previous owner had a penchant for dark colors, including black ceilings, gray walls and a fortress-like iron gate blocking the entry to the house. The fi rst thing to go was the gate. “All the neighbors keep telling me they are so glad we took it down,” Jill said. She also spent three weeks painting the interior of the house and replacing the dark fl ooring before the family could move in. Julie is happy with her new room, complete with lavender walls and sparkly curtains on the window. And now that the girls live just four houses from their old home, Jasmine is looking forward to walking to Ingleside Middle School next year with her friends, just as she had always wanted to do.
