Page 8 January 2011 It’s a big month for newly formed Scottsdale Glee as it enrolls singers for its spring semester and kicks off its inaugural concert season. The free concert will be 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at Shepherd of the Hills, 5524 E. Lafayette Blvd. The choir will sing in a variety of musical styles from old school Earth, Wind and Fire , to pop music’s Owl City to traditional children’s choral pieces sung in Latin. The group currently is enrolling singers for the spring semester Jan. 31-May 16. Groups meet at the church Mondays or Thursdays at 4:15 or 5:30 p.m. Tuition is $290. Singers range in age from 6 to 15 with various levels of experience – some don’t have any. “In a nutshell we exist to help foster happy connections between children and music,” said founder Nola Enge. “We adults can help to model those connections and help kids realize that music is so much more than standards to master. I like to say we’re a modern glee club with actual glee.” Children sing pop, rock, folk, musical theater and classical pieces, with a little choreography thrown in. Scottsdale Glee enrolls singers, sets fi rst concert Thrift shop offers bargains, helps high school students By Keyon Kareghi A shopper at this store might fi nd a rare antique and help teenagers graduate from high school all at the same time. Staffed by volunteers from the 150-member Auxiliary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, the thrift shop at 2626 N. Scottsdale Road is all about bolstering kids to succeed. The auxiliary is known for creating programs with different aims at teens, said thrift shop manager Kathleen Smith. The What’s Hip program is something only being done in Scottsdale. Created by one of the auxiliary members and thrift shop volunteers, it works to help speci fi cally guide young women. The graduation rate for the Boys and Girls Club youth is 91 percent, Smith said. Lynn Whitman, president of the auxiliary, said that while there is a manager and an assistant manager, the auxiliary provides the “sales force” on a volunteer basis. Most volunteers work between four to eight hours per week, so it takes about 60 volunteers per week to keep the store going. The shop thrives mostly on donations. Some items come to the store through estate sales or by individual donors who come by on a monthly or weekly basis. It also receives donations from a high- end active-wear company and from a department store, which donates all of its new but slightly imperfect merchandise, Smith said. Smith said one donor comes by every fi rst Tuesday of the month and donates items that are almost 90 percent new. “She doesn’t come in; she doesn’t want a receipt. She waits for me to arrive with her car backed up and the trunk popped,” Smith said. Continued on page 9 4520 E. Page 9 January 2011 Since the economy has changed, so has the thrift shop’s customer base. Smith said there is “the picker,” the person who comes in to fi nd things that are mismarked and worth far more than what the shop has estimated. Then there is the person who just loves going antiquing. Bargain hunters can help teens at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale’s thrift store. Photo by Keyon Kareghi. Thrift Continued from page 8 And there are many 40-somethings who come in looking to save money. Smith classi fi ed herself as an antique- looker. She particularly likes vintage coats and wore one of her fi nds to the auxiliary’s 30 th annual holiday luncheon at the Fairmont Princess Resort. “A woman came up to me with tears in her eyes and said ‘You touched my heart – you’re wearing my coat.’ “Her husband had bought this for her years ago for a charity fundraiser,” Smith said. Pam Longbine, co-chairwoman for the event, said she was thrilled with the outcome. With 800 people in attendance, the event was sold out. “Seeing how a group of women can join together and work so closely for the same cause is my favorite part of the job,” Longbine said. The auxiliary has been operating since 1962. It originally was developed for the board members’ wives to contribute to what was then the Boys Club. Most of the women who volunteer in the thrift shop are members of the auxiliary who have been active in the Boys and Girls Club for more than 30 years. Many had successful careers doing everything from practicing law to investigating fi nances for the IRS. “As an adult, I still feel like I am mentored here,” Smith said.
