Maafu (5’10”, 200 lbs.) busted through defenders last season and only picked up steam as the year progressed. He led the team with 648 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. “In our offense, we have three guys back there and he (Maafu) is going to get about 50 percent of the carries,” said coach Jim Ellison. “We expect big things, and he is really going to be a focal point for us.” Maafu will have help in the back fi eld from returning varsity backs Ryan Fochtman, Justice Means and Vince Roscoe. Fochtman showed fl ashes of brilliance early in the season before going down with an injury. Several young blockers will return to the Arcadia line and attempt to improve on last season. Brandon Turelli and Chris Paulson each found playing time last season as sophomores. While the players show promise, the coaching staff is hoping the experience will help them improve at the varsity level. “We’re hoping that Turelli gets a little more aggressive,” said Ellison. “I think he is going to mature as a player and become very important for us.” While the Titans have not been able to pinpoint a tight-end replacement for Thorn as of yet, a new talented receiver has emerged for Arcadia. Young wide out Alex Reynolds, who will be a junior next season, came up from JV late last season and showed off impressive skills, making several jaw-dropping catches. “This kid (Reynolds) is a pure receiver,” said Ellison. “He runs very good routes, and he knows how to get open.” While Reynolds seems like a lock at the wide-receiver position, determining which player will throw him the ball seems like a dilemma that will have to wait for camp to begin. Returning starting quarterback Cole Richardson will have to fend off late- season call up Payson Kendle if he wants to retain play-calling duties. “We are going to go into spring ball and rep both of them,” Ellison said. “We are going to see how they do, and the best guy will start. “Cole will see some time on defense next season, and it is possible that they will split time at quarterback.” Richardson struggled at times with his accuracy last year but showed a knack for moving around in the pocket and fi ghting for extra yards on the ground. Richardson also has the advantage of experience as he is entering his second full year on varsity. In limited time against Williams Field in the last game of the regular season, Kendle showed great arm strength and accuracy, completing three passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive front, Arcadia looks ready to fi ll any of the holes left by departing graduates. The team returns stud linebackers Andrew Bradway and Titans Continued from page 42 Alex Bolton, in addition to several capable backups looking to step into Berry’s spot. Eric Del fi nado and Dylan Salam will be two of the players looking to make an impact. At the corner position, Ellison is con fi dent he can fi nd a replacement for York. Options include Brendan Satran, who started at safety as a sophomore last season, and Mitch Manor. “We are going to see who mans up well and make a decision from there,” said Ellison. Arcadia also will bene fi t from the return of a few players that were lost to injury last season, including linemen Preston McLain and Jack Olson. The Titans, old and new, will have to execute at a high level next season as the team could face one of its most dif fi cult schedules in recent memory. While speci fi c matchups have not been determined yet in the new Division 3, Ellison sees a dif fi cult road ahead. “I am about 90 percent sure we will see Saguaro because of our geographic location, and even Thunderbird is a possibility,” Ellison said. “So we could see two defending state champions.” Like any other season, the Titans will need a combination of talent, execution and plain old good luck in order to extend their season into December next year. And it’s only January. Despite all of the variables and conjecture, Ellison is con fi dent in his team. “I think next year is de fi nitely going to be a good year for us.” National Advertising Network, Inc. • www.naninetwork.com AUTO DONATIONS DONATE A CAR & HELP CHILDREN FIGHTING DIABETES.
