By Julie Demetros Gulliver’s Travels Director: Rob Letterman Actors: Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, and Amanda Peet Full of bad jokes and puns, the new version of Gulliver’s Travels is disappointing. It starts with Gulliver (Black), who has led a dull, unnoticed life in the same job in the mail room of a large newspaper for the past 10 years. After a failed attempt to ask travel-writer Darcy (Peet), who he’s had a crush on for fi ve years, out on a date, he signs himself up for consideration as a travel journalist. Darcy hires him for the job after reading “his” amazing piece of writing, thanks to the copy and paste buttons. He sets sail for the Bermuda Triangle and is promptly sucked into an inside- out whirlpool and wakes up on the island of Liliput. All the people on this island, however, are only a few inches tall. Now he’s trying to help his new (and only) friend, Horatio (Segel), win the heart of the princess (Blunt) while trying to stop the princess’ fi ancée from destroying Liliput’s kingdom in a fi t of jealousy. With little story and many plot holes, this movie doesn’t live up to the expectations that the commercials for it promise. It seems like the main points of the movie are to modernize Gulliver’s Travels and let Jack Black have another crack at making immature jokes, and that’s it. Then there’s the 3-D part of the movie. 3-D has never seemed useful, even from the beginning. But these days, every single movie that’s made is made in 3-D! It distracts you from the actual story and the rest of the movie when there are little things popping out of the screen. There was no reason for 3-D in this movie. And what happened to the requirements for things to be rated PG? Sure, most little kids going to see the movie won’t get all the crude jokes, but still. The rating seems to have slacked on its requirements lately. Some of the jokes were actually funny, but less immature jokes are preferred. Did the screenplay writers have to make (or should it be “let”) Black “release” on the fi re and some of Liliput’s people? Black also adds his typical butt-crack jokes. All in all, this movie is a bit of a waste of time. Advising you to spend your weekend at the movies with another fi lm, I rate this movie with 2 stars out of 5, and I’m being generous. True Grit Director: Ethan Coen and Joel Coen Actors: Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin Exciting and entertaining, True Grit is the retelling of the story in the famous 1969 fi lm of the same title. This remake stars Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, a tough U.S. Marshal hired by 14-year old Mattie Ross (Steinfeld). He was hired to track down Mattie’s father’s murderer, Tom Chaney (Brolin). When Mattie catches wind that Chaney has gone into Indian Territory, she’s determined to go after him with the help of Cogburn. As Chaney has a lot of money on his head, Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon) is also tracking him through Indian Territory. LaBoeuf started out traveling with Cogburn and Mattie, but an argument leads LaBoeuf to leave and make his own hunt. This adventure has death, murder, and snakes. Oh my! All actors played their parts amazingly well, especially Bridges and Steinfeld. It has even been said that Bridges played the part better than John Wayne, who is famous for stealing the show in the original fi lm. The best acting job in the fi lm, though, would be Steinfeld as 14-year old Mattie. Bridges runs a close second, but Steinfeld blew the audience away. She was so convincing that, if the movie had been in a different language, her emotions and expressions would make her opinion obvious. Another thing is the story and the writing. The dialogue fl owed naturally, and the story kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The only bad part of the movie was the end, and even that wasn’t too bad. I was let down at the way that they wrapped the story up. It wasn’t poorly done, just a bit disappointing. Other than the last fi ve or so minutes of the fi lm, though, there isn’t anything dislikable about the movie, story, or cast. De fi nitely worth seeing, and thought to be perhaps better than the original, True Grit earns all 4 ½ stars!
