Page 41 January 2011 Canal cray fi sh easy catch with a little ham or bacon By Max McCauley It’s easy to catch a fi sh without a hook if the fi sh is a cray - fi sh. All you need is a fi shing pole and some bait like bacon or ham tied to your line to catch this invasive species. Yep, it is an invasive species living in Arizona’s canals. Originally these invertebrates were brought to Arizona by the Arizona Game and Fish to attract fi shermen. After the species’ population increased and became out of control, Game and Fish made it illegal to release cray fi sh in Arizona’s waterways. There is no way to kill them besides poisoning everything in the canals, but even that only lasts for a short time. During a hangout with my friends, we decided to go cray fi sh fi shing. The cray fi sh were a source of a ton of fun! We caught almost 50 cray fi sh in about an hour and half. Unsure what to do with them, we agreed to give them to Arcadia High School’s biotech and biology teacher, Eric Bodznick. We knew that he had just recently collected some cray fi sh from the canals for his classes. While delivering the 50 or so cray fi sh to Mr. Bodznick the next day, I learned that he had a critter farm at Arcadia that houses many different animals. It includes milkweed bugs, cray fi sh, rolly pollies, red worms, night crawlers, snails, butter fl ies, silkworms, guppies and gold fi sh. Curious, I asked Mr. Bodznick what he uses the cray fi sh for. He replied that he uses them in Zoology classes at Arcadia and that 4 th grade classes all over the Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District use them for their science units. To be able to house cray fi sh, Mr. Bodznick has to have a special license from Game and Fish. The license took a year to earn. In order to keep the license, Mr. Bodznick has to report the number of cray fi sh he catches and how many die, hatch or are still living at the end of every year. It was really fun to talk to Mr. Bodznick and I learned a couple of interesting facts about cray fi sh from him. Did you know that cray fi sh breathe air and have gills? How about the fact that the cray fi sh mating season is all year? But I think the most interesting fact is that cray fi sh hibernate. From late November to March, you will not catch or see very many cray fi sh. They burrow into the mud until the weather gets warmer. They’ve been found 4 feet underground! So, the next time you want to have fun with your friends, go catch some cray fi sh in the small canals. All you need is a fi shing pole and some bait. Max is a fi fth-grader at Hopi.
