Page 29 January 2011 Iruna offers opportunity to try Basque cuisine IRUNA 602-954-1700 7217 E. 1st Street (Old Town Scottsdale) irunaaz.com By Gabe Bertaccini Tell me, what food-loving traveler can visit San Sebastian in the Spanish Basque country and not fall head over heels for pintxos (pronounced “peenchos”), the local version of tapas? It happened to me. It’s happened to countless other foodies discovering Basque cuisine for the fi rst time. Slip into one of the more than 50 tapas bars lining the twisting, narrow streets of San Sebastian’s old town, order a glass of Txakolina wine, try one or more of the house specialties and then move on to the next bar for its specialties. When it gets too crowded at the bar, people move out into the street, leaning against the building, setting their glasses on a ledge, calling out to friends and meeting new ones. I highly recommend it. Struck by the tradition there and elsewhere in Spain, chef Aaron May wanted to bring that experience home to the Valley. I knew about him and about Iruna, his new creation, yet it was just another small- plates restaurant without any particular hook and seemed like such a yawn, so you’ll forgive me if I didn’t rush out to try Iruna in Old Town Scottsdale the minute it opened. But one night I was driving down Scottsdale Road on my way to another restaurant and realized we were just a block away from Iruna. Here’s a chance to at least see what it’s like, so I pulled over and ran in for a minute. Young Scottsdale types were enjoying a smoke outside. A wide glass door pivoted open on a wildly sociable scene inside. There’s no recognizing it as the old Pischke’s space. Opened up to loft-like dimensions, the single big room has a high wood ceiling that arches over the restaurant like the roof of an airplane hangar. Communal wood tables, but modern. I took a look at the menu – Spanish cheeses, pan roasted quail, crisp duck con fi t, and scallops with grape and almond gazpacho. Appealing enough, considering how inviting the space is. Why go somewhere else? I ran out, told the friend I’d left sitting in the car to call my other guest (she wouldn’t have left yet) and ask her to meet us here instead. After canceling our other reservation, I ordered a couple glasses of fl owery white Torres Vina Esmeralda while we waited for a table and for our friend to show. A party across the room breaks into the birthday song. A nearby group of fi lm people in from Los Angeles discusses the latest movie releases. A pair of couples running away from the kids for the night linger over their food. Otherwise, it’s girlfriends galore, four or fi ve of whom have drawn bar stools into a circle, so intent on their conversation that the entire scene around them could have disappeared in a puff of smoke and they never would have noticed.
