Page 25 January 2011 By Greg A. Bruns My very fi rst personal memory of school is one from the second grade at an elementary institution that was only known as Public School 113 (one-thirteen is how we pronounced it). I guess there weren’t too many historical fi gures or generous local donors in the tract-housing area of Indianapolis we lived in. My parents were young and broke, so clever school names weren’t on the list of housing requirements. I remember being one of three white kids at the entire school, and being a white 7-year-old in a black school in the mid- 70s in Middle America wasn’t so much a dif fi cult task as it was an awkward one. Case in point: I remember vividly the day I was spanked in front of the entire 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades by one very large and very angry arithmetic teacher. She was upset about cole slaw. I was – up until the moment I was humiliated and assaulted in front of 200 giggling children – a big fan of the cabbage-based dish. This day I am remembering was a good one for cole slaw fans, because they were serving it with our lunch in the cafeteria in little 3-ounce plastic cups with lids. During previous lunch breaks, I witnessed kids who stacked up cups of extra potato salad, baked beans or whatever side dish was served in the plastic cups with lids. Those kids would hover around the cafeteria “tray return area” and scoop up all the unopened food- in-a-cup items and then transport them to their little cubby trays (sort of like a locker, but without a lock) to take home later. I fi gured this was a sanctioned process with only a single requirement: a passion for whatever food item made the menu and got slopped into the little plastic tubs. I didn’t think to ASK anyone on this big day, as I fi gured it all out in my head with deductive reasoning and faith-based rationalizations (how could anyone deny me cole slaw that is clearly going in the garbage?). The way I saw this, I would be eating my favorite side dish for at least the next 45 days, since I had a little mountain of cole slaw containers sitting there near the tray return area and I hadn’t even asked anyone for theirs yet. I was too busy fi shing cole slaw treasure out of the garbage can, and dangerously incapable of relating consequences and actions.
